Major Law Firm Hit by Ransomware

Another ransomware attack makes headlines, this time in the legal professional services industry.  Law firms of all sizes are high-profile targets for cybercriminals.

Campbell Conroy & O'Neil, a major law firm, whose clients include Ford, Boeing, Johnson & Johnson, Exxon, and Walgreens was victimized by ransomware. The company did not reveal who was responsible for the attack, but the hackers were able to enter the system containing sensitive information such as names, birth dates, financial information, social security, account credentials, etc.

Campbell is offering 24 months of credit monitoring, fraud consultation, and identity theft restoration to the victims whose information was compromised.

The law firm disclosed that on Feb 27 they noticed some suspicious activity on their network and immediately contacted the FBI and cybersecurity experts. The investigators concluded that the hackers penetrated their network and accessed sensitive information. With such prominent clients, this breach is a realization of how vulnerable every company is to cyberattacks, regardless of the business size. Organizations should never let their guard down and always be vigilant. Although there is no 100% protection against ransomware, there are steps that can be taken to prevent or lessen the impact of an attack.
